I love eating out of the garden. The tomatoes are real and the flavor unmatched from the store.
There is nothing like having fresh basil and tomatoes on a toasted asiago bagel. The freshest flavors there are, and there is flavor in the tomato to enjoy.
We had a garden that fed most of the kids in the neighborhood. I finally had to tell everyone we only harvested on Tuesday and Thursday because they were over every day. I counted 23 kids eating vegetables out of the garden only rinsing them off in the hose. We sent some zucchini home with some of them and their mother called us to find out how to prepare it. It was not too hard at all to get them to eat their vegetables.
My 2 year old son and I have watermelon seed spitting contests in the backyard. It is great picking them out of the garden, cooling them in the refrigerator and spending time with him in the backyard. We just have to wash down the patio a bit, but well worth it.
My favorite lunch in August is corn on the cob, tomato sandwiches and maybe a bit of salad from the garden. I drive home from work at lunch least twice a week for it. We also have the same menu for dinner.
I look forward to steamed beet greens in the spring. A sure sign that summer is coming. We just put a bit of lemon juice on them and enjoy.
There is nothing like the flavor of vine ripened melons with vanilla ice cream while sitting in the shade of the big tree in the back yard. Great dessert and often we skip the ice cream. Store bought just is not the same.
The flavor of fresh herbs is a real experience. We take a spring of oregano right off the shrub and into the cooking pot it goes while the pasta is cooking. The pasta takes on a whole new flavor when it is cooked with herbs that were on the bush just minutes before you eat.
