A cherry tomato is a small variety of tomato that was first cultivated almost 200 years back. Originated in South America, they can grow up to a size of a golf ball. The cherry tomato is often regarded as the botanical variety of the cultivated berry.

History

It is believed that cherry tomatoes were cultivated in Greece as early as 1875. The 20th century saw a rise in popularity of cherry tomatoes in the United States. You will come across a number of recipes where cherry tomato is an important ingredient. Many will be surprised to know that former US President Richard Nixon had a cherry tomato salad!

Purpose/Use 

Cherry tomatoes are picked when they are green and then pickled to make a condiment called tomolive. It is so named as there is a similarity with olives in texture and appearance. Cherry tomatoes are regularly used in salads, on top of bruschetta and as an appetizer with dip.

Benefits & Features

Cherry tomatoes are tasty red beauties and are full of nutrition. They have more vitamin C and lycopene than a regular tomato. The plants starts giving a steady bounty of fruits in just 48 days. The height of the plant is around 2 feet and it can be sowed indoors.
